From Latin refract- (from refringere “to break back, refract”) + -o- + -meter (“measuring instrument”); coined as a scientific term for an instrument measuring refraction/refractive index.

Definition
A refractometer is a device that measures how much light bends (refracts) when it passes through a liquid or solid, allowing calculation of the substance’s refractive index; it is commonly used in laboratories and in industries such as food, beverage, and chemical quality control.
रिफ्रैक्टोमीटर एक उपकरण है जो यह मापता है कि किसी द्रव या ठोस से होकर गुजरते समय प्रकाश कितना मुड़ता (अपवर्तित होता) है; इससे पदार्थ का अपवर्तनांक निकाला जाता है। इसका उपयोग प्रयोगशालाओं तथा खाद्य, पेय और रासायनिक गुणवत्ता-नियंत्रण जैसे उद्योगों में आम है।
