लैटिन plebeius (प्लेब्स से संबंधित) से, जहाँ plebs/plebes का अर्थ ‘सामान्य जनता’ था; फ्रेंच/लैटिन रूपों के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया।
Definition
In ancient Rome, plebeians were the common citizens distinct from the patrician elite; in modern use, it can mean ordinary people and may be used disparagingly for someone seen as uncultured or vulgar.
प्राचीन रोम में प्लेबियन ‘पैट्रिशियन’ (उच्चवर्ग) से अलग सामान्य नागरिक थे; आधुनिक प्रयोग में यह ‘साधारण लोग’ के लिए आता है और कभी-कभी असभ्य/भद्दा समझे जाने वाले व्यक्ति के लिए तिरस्कारपूर्ण रूप में भी बोला जाता है।
