From English pleasantry (c. 15th–16th century), ultimately from French plaisant/pleasance and Latin placēre (“to please”); pleasantries is the plural form used for such remarks.

Pleasantries are small, polite, friendly remarks (often about safe topics like health, weather, or family) exchanged to create a pleasant atmosphere before getting to the main or serious subject; the word can also mean casual courteous comments, light jokes, or anything that adds cheer.
