Origin & History
OSS is an initialism formed from the first letters of “Open Source Software” (popularized from the late 1990s onward). Separately, OSS as “Office of Strategic Services” was the official name of a U.S. wartime intelligence agency (1942–1945). The martial-arts shout “oss” is commonly associated with Japanese martial arts culture and is used as a brief acknowledgement; its exact etymology is debated.

Definition
OSS most often refers to Open Source Software—software whose source code is made available under a license that allows users to view, modify, and redistribute it. Depending on context, OSS can also mean the Office of Strategic Services (the U.S. World War II-era intelligence organization) or be used as a shout of acknowledgement/encouragement (“oss!”) in some martial arts.
