From non- + conformist; conformist derives from Latin conformare (“to shape, form, make similar”). Historically used in England for Protestant Dissenters outside the Church of England; plural nonconformists.

Nonconformists are people who refuse to follow accepted rules, traditions, or official beliefs; historically in England, the term also referred to Protestants who did not conform to the Church of England.
