From Latin magnes (stone from Magnesia, a region associated with magnetic stone), via Greek magnēs lithos (“Magnesian stone”); the sense later broadened to the object producing magnetism.

Magnets are objects (natural or artificial) that create a magnetic field, attract ferromagnetic materials like iron and steel, and have two poles (north and south); figuratively, a magnet is someone or something that draws people’s attention or interest strongly.
