From the name of the Lualaba River, ultimately from local Central African (Bantu) languages used in the region; adopted into European languages via exploration and colonial-era mapping of the Congo Basin.

Definition
Lualaba refers primarily to a large river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), often identified with the upper course (headwaters) of the Congo River; it is also the name of Lualaba Province in the DRC.
