From log (a section of a tree trunk) + -ing; logging (timber-cutting) is recorded from the 17th–18th centuries; log in the sense of a record is older, and computer logging developed in the 20th century.

Loggings refers to (1) multiple instances or periods of logging (cutting and hauling timber), and/or (2) recorded entries (such as computer loggings of events).
