From Middle English forms of lead: (metal) from Old English lēad; (verb ‘to guide’) from Old English lǣdan; plural “leads” and the verb form “leads” developed through regular inflection in English.

Definition
“Leads” can be (1) a plural noun meaning pieces/instances of “lead” (the metal), “leads” meaning clues or sales prospects, or “leads” meaning advantages/positions in front; and (2) a verb form (he/she/it leads) meaning guides, goes first, or causes/results in something.
