From Late Latin correlatio (a mutual relation), formed from co- ‘together’ + relatio ‘relation’; popularized in modern scientific/statistical usage in the 19th–20th centuries.

Definition
Correlations are the relationships between variables showing how changes in one are associated with changes in another; in statistics, correlation measures the strength and direction of this association (it does not by itself prove cause and effect).
