From the verb chatter + the agent suffix -er; recorded in English from the 16th–17th centuries; later also used as a bird name in natural history.

Definition
A chatterer is someone who talks continuously and often about unimportant things; in another sense, it can refer to certain South American songbirds known as chatterers (especially cotingas).
