From catcall (mid-17th century), originally referring to a small whistle used to imitate a cat’s cry and later to express disapproval at theatres; now also used for rude whistles/comments toward people in public.

Catcalls are loud whistles, shouts, or sexually suggestive/insulting remarks directed at a person (often a woman) in public; the word can also mean jeering or booing to show disapproval of a performer or speech.
