From Middle English banke, from Old Norse banki (“ridge, bank”), related to Proto-Germanic *bankiz; the financial sense developed later from the idea of a bench/counter used by moneylenders.

Definition
“Banks” is the plural of “bank.” It most commonly refers to financial institutions where people keep money and take loans, but it can also mean the sides of a river or lake (river banks), or rows/sets of things (banks of lights/switches).
