Awork

/əˈwɝːk/

Origin & History

From Middle/early Modern English: prefix a- (meaning “in/on,” from Old English on) + work; used to mean “at work/working,” now largely archaic.

Definition

Used chiefly in older or poetic English as a fused form of “a-” + “work,” meaning ‘in the act/state of working’ (i.e., at work). It may also appear as a misspelling of “a work” (one work, a piece of work).
