From Greek autokratōr (“self-ruler”), via Latin/Neo-Latin and later English usage, built from auto- (“self”) + -krator (“ruler, power”).

Definition
An autocrat is a person who governs alone and has total, unlimited authority, often ruling without effective laws, institutions, or public accountability; historically, it was also used as an official title for some monarchs.
