From Middle English villein, from Old French vilain ‘peasant, farm servant’, from Late Latin villanus ‘man of a villa/estate’, from Latin villa ‘country house, farm’.

Villeins were medieval feudal peasants who were not free; they were legally tied to a manor, owed their lord labor services and payments, and had limited rights compared with free tenants.
