Origin & History

From vice- (meaning ‘in place of’ or ‘deputy’) + regency (rule during a monarch’s absence), modeled on Latin roots: vice ‘in place of’ and regere ‘to rule’.

Definition

Viceregency refers to the position and governing power of a viceroy (a ruler acting as the monarch’s representative), and by extension the time period or the region administered under that viceroy.
