From New Latin Streptococcus (genus name), formed from Greek streptos ‘twisted, chain’ + kokkos ‘berry’ (used for spherical bacteria); streptococci is the plural form.
নিউ-লাতিন Streptococcus (গণের নাম) থেকে এসেছে; গ্রিক streptos ‘পেঁচানো/শৃঙ্খলাকৃতি’ + kokkos ‘বেরি/গুটি’ (গোলাকার ব্যাকটেরিয়ার অর্থে) মিলিয়ে গঠিত; streptococci হলো এর বহুবচন।
Definition
Streptococci are round (coccus-shaped), Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus Streptococcus. Many live harmlessly in the mouth and gut, but some strains cause illnesses like strep throat, skin infections, pneumonia, or invasive disease.
স্ট্রেপ্টোকক্কাই হলো গোলাকার (কক্কাস-আকৃতির), গ্রাম-পজিটিভ ব্যাকটেরিয়া, যা Streptococcus গণের অন্তর্ভুক্ত। অনেকগুলো মুখ ও অন্ত্রে ক্ষতি না করে থাকে, কিন্তু কিছু প্রজাতি/স্ট্রেইন স্ট্রেপ থ্রোট, ত্বকের সংক্রমণ, নিউমোনিয়া বা গুরুতর ইনভেসিভ রোগ ঘটাতে পারে।
