From Middle English ruby(e), from Old French rubi/rubis, from Latin ruber (“red”); ultimately from the idea of redness. The plural “rubies” follows the spelling change y → ies.

Definition
“Rubies” is the plural of “ruby,” most commonly referring to clear deep-red precious gemstones (a variety of corundum). It can also mean a deep ruby-red colour, and in specialized contexts may refer to a red spinel, a heraldic red (gules), a particular small type size, certain bird names, or “rubi” (pronunciation guides for East Asian characters).
