From Old English ribb/ribb, from Proto-Germanic *ribjō (“rib, strip”), related to Dutch rib and German Rippe; later senses developed by analogy to rib-like supports and by slang for “teasing.”
পুরোনো ইংরেজি ribb/ribb থেকে এসেছে, যা প্রোটো-জার্মানিক *ribjō (“পাঁজর/ফালা”) থেকে; ডাচ rib ও জার্মান Rippe এর সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত। পরে পাঁজরের মতো সাপোর্ট-অর্থ উপমা থেকে এবং কথ্য ভাষায় ‘ঠাট্টা/টিজিং’ অর্থও গড়ে ওঠে।
Definition
“Ribs” most commonly means the 12 pairs of curved bones that form the chest cage and protect organs like the heart and lungs; it can also mean rib-like supports in structures (ships, aircraft wings, vaults), a cut of meat containing rib bones, or (informal) teasing jokes (“to give someone ribs/ribbing”).
“Ribs” সাধারণত বক্ষপিঞ্জর গঠনকারী ১২ জোড়া বাঁকানো হাড়কে বোঝায়, যা হৃদপিণ্ড ও ফুসফুসের মতো অঙ্গকে সুরক্ষা দেয়; এছাড়াও এটি জাহাজ/বিমানের ডানা/ভল্ট ইত্যাদির পাঁজরের মতো কাঠামোগত সাপোর্ট, পাঁজরের হাড়সহ মাংসের টুকরা, অথবা (অনানুষ্ঠানিক) ঠাট্টা-টিজিং (‘ribbing’) অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হয়।
