Origin & History
From Modern Latin polypus, from Ancient Greek polýpous (“many-footed”), originally referring to an octopus and later applied to tentacled animal forms and mucosal growths.
আধুনিক ল্যাটিন polypus থেকে, যা প্রাচীন গ্রিক polýpous (“বহু-পদ/অনেক পা-ওয়ালা”) শব্দজাত; প্রথমে অক্টোপাস বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হতো, পরে শুঁড়-যুক্ত প্রাণীর দেহরূপ এবং শ্লেষ্মা ঝিল্লির টিস্যু-বৃদ্ধির ক্ষেত্রেও প্রয়োগ হয়।
Definition
Polyps are (a) abnormal tissue growths that project from mucous membranes (e.g., in the nose, colon, uterus) and may cause bleeding, blockage, or other symptoms; and (b) the sessile, cylindrical body form of certain cnidarians (e.g., hydra, corals), with a mouth surrounded by tentacles.
পলিপ বলতে (ক) শ্লেষ্মা ঝিল্লি থেকে বেরিয়ে থাকা অস্বাভাবিক টিস্যু-বৃদ্ধি (যেমন নাক, বৃহদান্ত্র, জরায়ুতে), যা রক্তপাত, বাধা বা অন্যান্য উপসর্গ ঘটাতে পারে; এবং (খ) কিছু নিডারিয়া/সিলেন্টারেট প্রাণীর স্থির, নলাকার দেহরূপ (যেমন হাইড্রা, প্রবাল), যার মুখের চারপাশে শুঁড়/টেন্টাকল থাকে।
