Origin & History
The term “Odissi” comes from “Odra” or “Odisha,” the name of the eastern Indian region where the dance originated, and essentially means “from Odisha” or “in the style of Odisha”; it developed from temple dance traditions associated with the worship of Lord Jagannath and was codified in the 20th century as a classical dance form.

Odissi is one of the major classical dance forms of India, originating from the eastern state of Odisha; it is known for its graceful, fluid movements, intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras), and devotional themes dedicated mainly to Lord Jagannath, and was traditionally performed in temples by devadasis (temple dancers).
