Origin & History
From arrow (named after the arrow symbols ↑ ↓ ← → printed on the keys) + key (keyboard key); the term became common with computer keyboards and graphical interfaces in the late 20th century.

An arrow key is any of the four directional keys on a computer keyboard (↑ ↓ ← →) that move the cursor, highlight, or selection in a chosen direction in text editors, menus, games, and other interfaces.
