From Arabic عَجَم‎ (ʿajam), originally meaning ‘non-Arabs’ or people whose language was not Arabic (often Persians); later also used in music theory as the name of a maqam.

Definition

Ajam refers historically to people who are not Arabs, often particularly Persians; in Arabic music, it also names a specific melodic mode similar to the Western major scale.
