শব্দটি ফারসি ‘مُهر (মোহর)’ থেকে বাংলায় এসেছে; ফারসিতে অর্থ ‘সিল/ছাপ’, এবং সেখান থেকে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ায় সিল ও মুদ্রা-অর্থে বিস্তার লাভ করে
The word entered Bengali from Persian ‘مُهر (mohr)’, meaning ‘seal/stamp’; from there it spread in South Asia with senses including seal and coin.
Definition
মোহর বলতে সাধারণত কোনো নথি, পত্র বা প্যাকেটের ওপর কর্তৃপক্ষ/প্রতিষ্ঠানের পরিচয় ও অনুমোদন বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত সিল বা ছাপকে বোঝায়; প্রাচীনকালে ‘মোহর’ শব্দটি মুদ্রা/কয়েন অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে, এবং বাংলা/ভারতীয় ব্যবহারে ‘সীল’ নামের সামুদ্রিক প্রাণীকেও কখনও ‘মোহর’ বলা হয়
Mohor commonly means a seal or stamped impression used on documents, letters, or parcels to show identity and authorization; historically it has also meant a coin/money, and in some Bengali/Indian usage it can refer to a seal (the marine mammal).
