সংস্কৃত ‘কর্ম’ (কাজ/ক্রিয়া) + ‘কাণ্ড’ (অংশ/পর্ব/বিভাগ) থেকে গঠিত; বিশেষভাবে বৈদিক সাহিত্যে ‘কর্মকাণ্ড’ বলতে যজ্ঞাদি আচারগত অংশকে বোঝায়

কর্মকাণ্ড বলতে সাধারণভাবে কোনো কাজ সম্পাদনের জন্য যে সব কার্যকলাপ, পদ্ধতি ও আনুষ্ঠানিক ব্যবস্থা ধারাবাহিকভাবে করা হয়, তাকে বোঝায়; ধর্মীয় প্রেক্ষিতে এটি পূজা-অর্চনা, যজ্ঞ, শ্রাদ্ধ ইত্যাদি আচার-অনুষ্ঠানের বিধিবদ্ধ সম্পাদনকেও নির্দেশ করে
