সংস্কৃত ধাতু ‘ধৃ’ (ধারণ করা) থেকে ‘ধার্য’ (যা ধারণ/বহন/আরোপ করা যায়)

From the Sanskrit root ‘धृ (dhṛ)’ meaning ‘to hold/bear’, yielding ‘धार्य (dhārya)’ meaning ‘that which can be held/borne/imposed’.

যা ধরা, বহন করা বা মনে/হৃদয়ে ধারণ করা যায়; আবার প্রশাসনিক বা আর্থিক প্রসঙ্গে যে কর, শুল্ক, ফি ইত্যাদি আরোপ বা নির্ধারণ করা হয়—তাও ‘ধার্য’ বলা হয়

That which can be held, borne, or retained (physically or in mind/heart); also, in administrative/financial contexts, a tax, duty, fee, etc. that is leviable or chargeable is termed ‘ধার্য’.
